Traces the history of the Vale of Kashmir and of the State of Jammu and Kashmir from ca. 1500 BC to September-October 2002 with emphasis upon the events leading up to and following Indian independence and the de facto partition of the state as a consequence of the first Indo-Pakistan war. This work attempts to correct many of the misconceptions visible daily in American newspaper accounts of events in Jammu and Kashmir.
